Oversee the artistic and musical direction of a project from first conversation to final delivery, balancing the musician's vision with the practical realities of venue, schedule, and budget.

PRE-PRODUCTION
  • Score study and familiarization with the repertoire to be recorded.

  • Attending rehearsals and meeting with musicians to discuss matters such as tempi, phrasing, temperament, etc...

  • Venue selection.

  • Team selection and sub-contracting.

  • Budgeting.

  • Session planning.

PRODUCTION
  • Work with recording engineer to ensure that the audio capture matches the musician's artistic vision and is stylistically appropriate.

  • Manage session workflow so that all repertoire is covered in the allotted time, musicians maintain their energy and focus, and all union rules (if applicable) are followed.

  • Take selection. Identifying the most musically compelling and/or technically flawless portions of a performance, ensuring that takes match in tempo and energy so that they can be edited together.

  • Identifying issues with balance, intonation, ensemble, rhythm, as well as extraneous noises.

  • Score marking. To help make sessions more efficient and to guide the editor and mixer in post-production.

POST-PRODUCTION
  • Oversee and direct the work of the editing, mixing, and mastering engineers.

  • Act as the conduit between artist(s) and engineers.

  • Ensure that the project stays on budget.
